45 Lives Changed in One Week – Neutering Campaign with the Team from Switzerland - 2025-09-06

Between September 1 and 5, a six-member Swiss team visited the Sos Dogs shelter in Șișterea, bringing lasting changes to the lives of animals in a short period. The delegation included veterinarians Valeria Grifa and Lea Brandle, veterinary student Annina Baumann, and three volunteers — Manuela Zanforlin, Markus Brandle, and Walter Podolak.

The team did not come to rest: during the week, they performed neutering on a total of 45 animals — dogs and cats alike. This series of interventions significantly contributed to the animals’ future well-being: the procedures reduce overpopulation, prevent serious diseases (such as testicular cancer or pyometra), and decrease the risk of animals being abandoned with their offspring.

Special thanks go to the residents of Sălacea, who entrusted 18 dogs to our care during the week and consented to their neutering. This trust and cooperation provide immense support for our shared goal: reducing overpopulation and ensuring a better future for the animals. While neutering cannot solve every problem, it is the only effective tool to manage the global overpopulation crisis locally.

One particularly moving and instructive case occurred during the week: one dog’s sterilization was planned from the start as a complex and lengthy procedure due to an inguinal hernia and pregnancy. The Swiss team took on the challenge and successfully performed the three-hour surgery, saving the dog’s life. Upon waking, the dog wagged its tail to greet its rescuers, while the team celebrated the successful operation with tears of joy. This case highlights the importance of a professional, compassionate, and experienced team in neutering campaigns.

We highly appreciate that a mostly young, dedicated, and professional team stood by us. Their expertise, empathy, and devoted work deserve recognition. We look forward to their return — the work continues, and together we can give even more lives a chance.
